How to Operate a Skid Steer: A Buyer’s Practical Guide (with Sunward Insights)

You only need to master three things to operate a skid steer safely and productively: balance control, attachment switching, and consistent safety checks.

If you're new to skid steers—or you're the person buying them for your crew—that's the short answer. The longer version involves real-world experience, a few surprises, and some things vendors won't tell you. I've been managing equipment purchasing for a mid-sized company since 2020, processing roughly $300K annually across eight vendors. Our fleet includes a Sunward skid steer loader and a couple of track loaders, so I've watched operators—good, bad, and mediocre—use these machines on everything from demolition to landscaping.

1. Balance control is not intuitive

Most people think operating a skid steer is like driving a car. It's not. The steering is skid-based (think tank steering), and the center of gravity shifts dramatically when you lift a heavy load. What most people don't realize is that lifting a full bucket while turning on a slope can tip the machine sideways —I've seen it. The common rule: keep the load low when turning, and never exceed the rated operating capacity (ROC). For our Sunward model, that's around 1,750 lbs, but check your specific plate.

Here's something vendors won't tell you: the ROC figures assume a perfect scenario. On uneven ground or with worn tires (or tracks), the safe limit is probably 10-15% lower. I learned never to assume the spec sheet is the safety limit after an incident that cracked a wheel motor housing—surprise, surprise, the warranty didn't cover it.

2. Attachment switching is faster than you think—but trickier than you expect

The universal quick coupler (a standard on most skid steers) lets you swap buckets, forks, augers, and brooms in seconds. But there's a catch: alignment. If you're off by a few degrees, the pins won't seat correctly. I've seen operators curse and bang levers trying to force it. The secret is to feather the tilt and lift controls gradually while watching the pin alignment—not just jamming forward.

Speaking of attachments: we keep a bucket hat (the operator's sun shade, though I prefer a hard hat with brim) and a DEWALT drill on site for quick adjustments. The drill is used to tighten coupler bolts when they loosen over time—something the manual says happens but you only appreciate after the third time. Cross-compatibility can save you money, but verify before assuming.

3. Safety checks: what's really worth doing

You've heard the checklist a hundred times: check fluid levels, tire pressure (or track tension), lights, seatbelt, ROPS structure. But in practice, I've found two things matter most:

  • Daily grease points — The manual says every 8 hours. Operators often skip it. The result? Premature bushing wear, which means more Sunward track loader parts orders. We now put a grease gun right next to the ignition.
  • Operator awareness of blind spots — A skid steer's visibility is surprisingly poor to the rear and sides. A spotter is mandatory in crowded areas. This was true five years ago when we started, but today's cabs are slightly better—still, don't rely on mirrors alone.

I can only speak to our experience with a medium-sized fleet (3-4 machines). If you're dealing with a large fleet or different attachment types, the calculus might be different. But for most contractors and small-to-mid operations, these three areas cover 80% of the learning curve.
